Sydney wakes up to cool change after constant heatwave
Sydneysiders have enjoyed a much cooler night’s sleep after the mercury plummeted dramatically yesterday afternoon following a constant span of sweltering days since the end of last year.
Temperatures at Mascot cooled by 11 degrees in 10 minutes at 12pm, with other sites experiencing similar drops.
Observatory Hill dropped by five degrees in 15 minutes at the same time.
The change occurred later out west, with Penrith and Richmond plunging by seven and six degrees respectively after 3pm.
Earlier northwesterly winds and sunshine caused the city to rapidly heat to the mid-to-high thirties.
In the Illawarra region to the south, a severe thunderstorm brought a wet start for Kiama, with rainfall reaching 65mm – the highest 24-hour total since November 2017.
Rain and easing wind conditions have allowed crews to get the upper hand on several bushfires burning across New South Wales.
A fire threatening a community north of Sydney has been downgraded to "advice" after South Maroota residents were yesterday told to take shelter.
Two fires at Newcastle have also been brought under control, but people are advised to stay across the warnings.
Sydney is in for another possible shower today, with temperatures staying firmly within the 19 to 23 degree range.
In Melbourne, mostly sunshine is expected, with a minimum of 14 and a top of 22 degrees.
Brisbane will also enjoy mostly sunshine and maximum temperature of 31.
In north Queensland, Tropical Rainstorm Penny – downgraded earlier from a Category One cyclone – has begun to track back towards the coast.
While it is unlikely to be an intense system when it touches down, it will still produce strong winds and heavy rainfall throughout the week.
Mostly sunshine is forecast for Adelaide, Canberra and Hobart too, with the mercury hitting highs of 31, 28, 26 and 22 respectively.
Across the country to Perth, the case is much the same. Temperatures will climb as high as 38, up from a minimum of 20 degrees.
